While the government does not describe the problems women may face by standing in a general queue, it states, âThese provisions will go a long way on solving the problem of women who want to purchase the train tickets for themselves and their families.â
8. Privileged parking, women-only gyms
Reserved parking for women is coming up everywhereâ they are in malls, colleges, and pub districts such as Church Street9 and Brigade Road in Bangalore. The city administration wishes to minimise inconvenience to women when they go out for drinking.
The Bangalore Municipal corporation) has, in addition, introduced women-only gyms at all public parks. Many private gyms and swimming pools also reserve a few hours of the day when men are not allowed in. Bangalore Metro has a separate entrance for women, in addition to reserved seats and separate coaches.
9. Best seats in airplanes
Air India reserves the first six rows of premium seats for women10. These are the most expensive and sought-after seats, and women get them for no extra charge. No men are allowed on those seats.
Vistara does not give the inconvenient middle seats to women.11 Most airlines charge more for the window and aisle seats, but women get them as a part of their entitlement. Similarly, Spice Jet will reserve every fourth row for women.12
Essentially, women are entitled to get more for less money than men.
10. Lower berths in trains
The Railways have reserved13 the sought-after lower seats for women aged 45 years or above. Men of the age of at least 60 will qualify to get the same privilege.
There is no scientific evidence to support that a 59-year-old man can comfortably climb up using those tiny rails is stronger than a 45-year-old woman. In fact, for anyone in the 40s, climbing up is risky; however, to discriminate against men of 59 is a crime against humanity.
Women are only about 10% weaker than men14. We must also correlate with an accelerated decline in strength during the late 40s and early 50s. Two to three years would be adequate for the strength difference between men and women, if at all. In addition, men are bigger and heavier too, so any additional strength men may have would be compensated by the higher weight of the older men. We already know that womenâs legs are 5.8% stronger than menâs from chapter 2.
The age difference of 15 years is certainly not attributable to strength difference, but simply to discrimination against men, and appeasement to women.
11. Reservation and financial reward for studying
The government uses public funds to promote the education of girls and reduce dropouts by providing financial support.15 While boys drop out more than girls,16 usually to earn for the family, but the funding goes only to the girls. Do also note that these benefits are available for unmarried girls only. It is probably expected that the husband will pay for such expenses. In addition, there are a large number of private sector scholarships exclusively for women.17 There are no scholarships only for boys.
